Twins owner, Watkins to meet
by La Velle E. Neal III

Twins President Jerry Bell said Friday that team owner Carl Pohlad will meet with Donald Watkins within the next two weeks.

Bell and Watkins, the Birmingham, Ala., businessman who is interested in buying the Twins, set up the meeting Friday during a brief phone conversation.

"[Watkins] expressed an interest in meeting with Mr. Pohlad and this is a way to do that," Bell said. "Where it goes from there, I do not know."

Bell said that a time or location for the meeting has not been determined.

This would be the first known discussion between Pohlad, whose club is believed to be a target of baseball's contraction plan, and Watkins, who would be the first black to own a Major League Baseball team. All previous conversations have been between Bell and Watkins.

Watkins could not be reached to comment Friday.
